Background:
Naledi Theatre Awards:
The NALEDI Theatre Awards has been in existence for 3 years and is firmly recognized as the Premier Awards event on the SA Theatre Calendar. Its Mission is to recognize and reward individuals, groups and companies within the Performing Arts in Gauteng, and thereby raise the profile of Live Theatre and create awareness of the abundant talent alive and well on our stages.
Companies and individuals have been approached to sponsor categories of their choice, and thereby demonstrate their support for Live Theatre. BASA, The Gauteng Dept of Arts and Culture , and the National Department of Arts and Culture (DAC) have given generous support and sponsorship to the Naledi theatre Awards.
The Panel of Judges consists of informed and regular theatre-goers, and members of the media covering the arts in Johannesburg. Judging of the Naledi Theatre Awards is verified by an independent auditor.
The NALEDI THEATRE AWARDS covers all Main-Stream professional productions staged in Gauteng from the period 1 January – 31 December each year. In 2005 the judges evaluated over 80 productions in 25 categories.

Excerpt from the address by the Executive Director of the Naledi Theatre awards, Dawn Lindberg, 19 February 2006:
"We would like to acknowledge the support given to the Naledi's by our sponsors: The State theatre, Wits University Performing Arts, Computicket, Pro-Sound, FNB, Standard Bank, Vodacom, Wharfedale-Audiosure, Pro-sound, Teljoy, Gallo Music, and Saturn records, as well as the generosity and commitment of individual sponsors: Christopher Seabrook and Percy Tucker. BASA has provided support funding. Thank you all for having the faith and guts to get the Naledis into orbit.
We are especially grateful this year for substantial funding from the Gauteng Department of Arts and Culture, as well as DAC, both of which ministries have observed the achievements of Naledi over the past two years and fully endorse our efforts and wholeheartedly support the concept of recognition and reward for the world class talent and endeavour on our Gauteng stages.
Dr. Pallo Jordan has a future vision which embraces all the provinces in which theatre is found. Given the support of DAC, the Naledi's can be replicated and broadened into a National system. The opportunity is there for SABC TV to weld our Naledi Theatre Awards into a National telecast of real value to the whole of South Africa."
