THE SECOND ANNUAL
NALEDI THEATRE AWARDS CEREMONY 13TH FEBRUARY 2005, BARNYARD THEATRE BROADACRES STARS SHINE BRIGHTLY AT THE NALEDI THEATRE AWARDS
Enormous warmth, vibrant energy and a wonderful generosity of spirit filled the air while stars cheered ecstatically as their peers were announced as winners, and three and a half hours flew by as top celebrities presented the trophies interspersed with a show-case of world class performance talent. The Barnyard theatre proved to be an ideal venue with excellent sound and lighting, a quite Shakespearian lay-out, with heavy wooden tables on 3 levels, laden with delectable picnic baskets filled with goodies to munch throughout the evening. Dawn Lindberg staged and directed an outstanding show that ran seamlessly, and featured international celebrities: Yvonne Chaka-Chaka and Anthony Fridjhon as MC's, highlights from "Phantom", "Joseph", "Tapsula", "Who Really Freed Nelson", "Barbershop" and the Barnyard's "Rocky Horror Show". Mark Banks levelled the playing fields by fearlessly dissing everyone, producers and performers alike. A breathtaking dance interlude was provided by a delicate pas de deux from Ballet Theatre Afrikan's "Windows". Percy Tucker was overheard to say afterwards: "It was better than the Oscars!" "What a sheer privilege it was being there tonight!" remarked one prominent Theatre Critic. "Dawn blended every known theatre genre into an entertainment programme South Africa can be proud of.. Seasoned with elation, nostalgia, mutual respect and joy, this evening was a triumph for South African Theatre." Presenters of the awards included Mbongeni Ngema and the beautiful Leleti Khumalo (who stars in the Oscar Nominated "Yesterday"), John Kani, Sandra Prinsloo, Bill Flynn, Colin Moss (SA sexiest man and star of "My Zinc bed"), Luthuli Dlamini (Scandal), Karin Van der Laag (Story of an African Farm), Mark Lottering, Mzwandile Ngubeni, Ashley Callie, John Matshikiza, David Meyer, Michael Richard and Louise St. Claire, Ian and Viv von Memerty, Caz, Marianne Fassler, Gladys Agulhas, Gereard Bester, Anne Williams, Robert Whitehead (Isidingo), Percy Tucker, and doyenne of SA musical theatre, Joan Brickhill. A moving highlight of the evening was the presentation of "Life-Time Achievement Awards" to no less than 15 stalwarts of our SA stages: Lilian Dube, Smal Ndaba, Phyllis Klotz, John Kani, Winston Ntshona, Fiona Fraser, Wilna Snyman, Michael McCabe, Neels Hansen, Joyce Levinsohn, Nomhla Nkonyeni, Dale Cutts, (who is recovering from a recent stroke), returned exile, Zakes Mokae, and a posthumous award to Dolly Rathebe, which was accepted by her son. "The Naledi Theatre Awards is an important event on the Gauteng calendar, and is the only award system that recognises and applauds the outstanding world class talent on our Proudly Gauteng stages", said Dawn Lindberg, Naledi Theatre Awards Convenor, ". The Naledi Forum again invites proactive participation from the arts media! We need your focus and your constructive voice on the panel of judges for the coming year." "We acknowledge the continuing and valuable support of our current sponsors: Standard Bank, Computicket, Teljoy, First National bank, Wharfedale Pro , Gallo Music, Saturn Records, Barney's Paint, the State Theatre, and Wits University Performing Arts as well as individuals Percy Tucker and Christopher Seabrooke.
