NALEDI THEATRE AWARD WINNERS FOR 2005:
The glittering star-studded ceremony took place this year at the new University of Johannesburg Arts Centre on Sunday 19 February 2006. MC's for the ceremony were award - winning actor Bill Flynn and TV personality Rosie Motene. Presenters of each category were well-known stage and television personalities including singers Mara Louw and Steve Hofmeyr, David Kramer, James Ncgobo, Somizi Mhlongo, Debora Patta and last year's Miss SA, Claudia Henkel. Highlights from the popular shows Sophiatown, Chicago, Ama-Taps, Snoopy, 2 for the Price of 1 and Captain Entertainment in Music & Mayhem provided top-class entertainment. Lifetime Achievement awards were given to veteran actor and radio DJ, Cocky Tlholhalemaje, TV star Mary Twala, mentor and promoter Queenith Ndaba, Stage Manager Whinney Isiah Setimo and actor TV star, Louis Van Niekerk. A posthumous award was given to actor Frantz Dobrowsky who died tragically in January this year. His brother, Dan Dobrowsky, collected his trophy. Thanks to the generosity of DAC, the Lifetime Achievers each received a substantial cheque. Winners in all categories also received a generous cheque thanks to sponsors of individual categories. The Naledi Theatre Awards covered all mainstream professional, live theatre productions that took place during 2005. The judging panel comprised notable professionals, journalists and theatre lovers, Zingi Mkefa, Christina Kennedy, Br Michael Burke, Carla Feldman, Christa Schamburger, Greg Homann, Helen Heldenmuth, Jakkie Groenewald, Jerry Raletebele, Luvuyo Kakaze, Lyle Britton-Masekela, Paul Boekkooi, Peter Feldman, Robyn Sassen, Sandile Memela, Talia Rabinowitz, Thelma Machogo and Theresa Leslie-Munchick, under the chairmanship of businessman Doug Maritz. An independent auditor verified the results. In the category the Best Community Theatre Award (sponsored by Computicket (Pty) Ltd and administered by SANCTA) the winner was Desperate Measures by Nelson Mokoena. As a precursor to the Naledi Award ceremony the 3rd SA National Community Theatre (SANCTA) Awards ceremony was also held on Sunday All the nominees from over 80 productions attended the Naledi Award ceremony together with members of the Media, theatrical Agents, Producers, Sponsors, Celebrities, and representatives from DAC and the Gauteng Department of Arts and Culture. Dawn Lindberg, Naledi Executive Director acknowledged the generosity of the all the sponsors in particular DAC and the Gauteng Department of Arts and Culture who were sponsoring the Awards for the first time, also she said, "we were absolutely thrilled to have the use of the beautiful new Theatre of the University of Johannesburg's Art Centre which added an extra glamour and comfort to the event and we extend our thanks to the Theatre's administrative staff ".
